Reading Rockets is a
national public media literacy initiative offering information and resources on
how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can
help. According to Louisa Moats, reading is a complicated task so she titled
her influential
article about the skills and knowledge educators need to teach reading well
"Teaching Reading is Rocket Science." That's how Reading Rockets got
its name!
This website provides
many useful tools from the building blocks of reading to classroom
strategies to creating inclusive classrooms — everything you need to know to
help young and struggling readers succeed. Here you'll find proven ideas for
the classroom, tips to share with parents, video of best practices, expert
interviews, and the latest research — on print awareness, the sounds of speech,
phonemic awareness, phonics, informal assessment, fluency, vocabulary,
spelling, comprehension, and writing.
There are four main categories to conduct searches on the
home page: Teaching Reading, Helping Struggling Readers, Reading Topics A-Z,
and
Children’s Books & Authors. The Teaching Reading category offers classroom
strategies, videos on teaching reading and writing, as well as more
professional development opportunities for teachers. The Helping Struggling
Readers Category features articles and research briefs to enhance literacy.
This particular category also offers strategies about enhancing a struggling
reader’s self-esteem in relation to literacy and background information on why
some children struggle with literacy. The Topic A-Z provides topics for reading
skills and videos on how to teach and incorporate fun activities to enhance
student’s reading skills. The last category offers different books for
children.
Reading Rocket has a strong theme, great
literary website, well designed and very professional looking so I recommend
using this website for literary activities to enhance student’s knowledge in
reading.
